Background of the Study
Career counseling plays a vital role in helping students make informed decisions about their future professions. For nursing students, career counseling can provide guidance on the various career pathways available within nursing, helping students align their interests, strengths, and values with suitable roles in the healthcare field (Chavez et al., 2023). Career counseling is especially important in nursing, a profession that offers a wide range of opportunities, from clinical practice to administrative roles, research, and education. Effective counseling can significantly impact how nursing students perceive the profession, their career aspirations, and their commitment to the field.
At Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina, nursing students are often uncertain about the various career opportunities within the nursing profession and may lack clarity regarding the best career path. Career counseling services within the university can provide students with the necessary information to make informed decisions, fostering a more positive perception of nursing as a profession. This study will explore the effect of career counseling on nursing students’ perceptions of nursing as a career, particularly in terms of job satisfaction, career progression, and overall commitment to the profession.
Statement of the Problem
Many nursing students lack a clear understanding of the wide-ranging career opportunities available within the nursing field. This lack of awareness may influence their perception of nursing as a profession, potentially leading to low motivation, job dissatisfaction, and high attrition rates. This study seeks to examine how career counseling influences nursing students' perceptions of nursing as a profession at Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effect of career counseling on nursing students' perception of nursing as a profession.
2. To explore the relationship between career counseling and nursing students’ career aspirations.
3. To evaluate nursing students’ perceptions of the usefulness of career counseling in shaping their professional development.
Research Questions
1. How does career counseling affect nursing students' perception of nursing as a profession?
2. What is the relationship between career counseling and nursing students’ career aspirations?
3. How do nursing students perceive the value of career counseling in shaping their professional development?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nursing students who receive career counseling will have a more positive perception of nursing as a profession compared to those who do not receive counseling.
2. There is a significant positive correlation between career counseling and nursing students' career aspirations within the nursing field.
3. Nursing students who participate in career counseling will report higher satisfaction with their career development compared to those who do not.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Umaru Musa Yar'adua University, Katsina, who have received career counseling. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported perceptions and the challenge of determining the direct causality between career counseling and changes in students' career perceptions.
